Yep, you heard right, Halloween Month.
Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year and I take the whole month of October to celebrate it. Capping it off on the 31st with the Big Day and taking my chongos out to Trick or Treat.
What I like to do most to celebrate Halloween Month though is, I watch horror movies. All of them. From Micheal Myers to Saw and Vincent Price movies and old black and whites, the b grade, the big budget ones. Just all of them.
I play spooky music, like the theme songs from "Halloween" and "The Exorcist" and hokey, fun songs like the "Purple People Eater".
I read Edgar Allen Poe stories and poems (got a few recorded by people like Christopher Walken doing "The Raven") and others.
Other holidays get a month to celebrate, like Christmas. Heck, Christmas music is played thanksgiving anymore and Christmas displays and products are on the shelf about that time as well.
So, I celebrate Halloween for the whole month. I have a reason to do so. I hate fear.
Moreso, I hate being controlled by fear. Won't do it. Nope, nuh uh.
Halloween is the time of year to spit in the face of fear. To mock it and show that not only can we live our lives not under it's frozen spell, but we openly challenge it.
I personally defy fear. I must admit, I have done some pretty dumb things in my life just to show I wasn't afraid. A testament to my fearlessness and my idiocy at the same time.
The Halloween holiday gives me a chance to celebrate conquering fear and driving it back into the shadows. I will mock fear by wearing it's own face as a mask. I will undermine fear by watching horror movies and yawning at the 'worst' parts.
I will challenge fear by pinching that vampiress on the butt and taking her candy as I leave the door. (OK, I might not pinch her butt, but it sounds like fun, heh heh)
That's a lot of fear defying. It takes more than one day. I have to spread it out and pace myself.
Oh yes, Halloween month is coming and all the fearmongers out there beware, if you think you are scary, you ain't seen me yet.
